Bound in pleasing 1/2 morocco with gilt lettering and decoration, marbled paper-covered boards, top edge gilt. Spine slightly faded, extremities slightly rubbed, lacking tissue guard from frontispiece, sporadic light foxing but plates mostly unaffected. There is no edition of this date mentioned in Mullens and Swann or Freeman both of which give 2nd ed. as 1873, we tentatively suggest that this is 2nd impression of 1st ed.                            £800.00

Engraved frontispiece of Selborne, 40 hand coloured wood engravings, publisher's ads at each end. Spine relaid, inner hinges repaired, corners slightly rubbed, prize label on front pastedown. This edition is edited by Edward Jesse and William Jardine's and first appeared in 1851. The issue with hand-coloured illustrations is not common.         £50.00

33. Wood, W. Index Testaceologicus, an Illustrated Catalogue of British and Foreign Shells. London,  Willis and Sotheran, 1856. New  rev. ed. 25.0cms x 15.0cms. Recently rebound in 1/2 calf with cloth covered boards, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, contrasting label. 46 hand coloured plates. Ex library with label on front free end paper, reference number in gilt at foot of spine, stamp on back of titlepage, on final page and on back of every plate. Some contemporary annotations to text, some foxing on edges and on guards, plates generally clean and bright. This copy is the last, revised edition edited by Sylvanus Hanley and containing the greatest number of plates.                                                 £200.00

Series of articles on egg collecting  from Boys Own Paper pasted in on 46 pages (a few pages left blank). With it a few other loose paper cuttings relating to birds and two chromolithograph plates one of birds eggs and one of parrots (both torn at folds) Published when egg collecting was a manly hobby for boys and not a criminal offence.                                                                                    £30.00

These volumes are in fine condition and make a pleasing run. Vols 8 and 9 recently rebound in a near match to vol 1 - 7, binding excellent, contents clean but with a few contemporary annotations. Vols 1 - 4 of New Series also bound in contemporary 1/2 calf but not matching first series and vol 2 not matching others in this series. Externally rubbed but contents clean.
